Cost factors

What Influences the Cost of a Hair Transplant?

The total cost comes down to one number: how many grafts you need. And that depends on six key factors.

Man concerned about hair loss — hair transplant Hamilton NZ

The Extent of Hair Loss

The number of grafts required is directly influenced by how much hair you have already lost. The larger the area that needs coverage, the more grafts are needed. During your consultation, Bülent assesses the size of the recipient area, the density of your existing hair, and your goals — all of which determine your graft count.

Back of head showing donor area — hair transplant NZ

Donor Site Availability

Your donor hair — the follicles taken from the back and sides of your scalp — is a finite resource. The density and quality of this area directly limits how many grafts can be safely harvested. Bülent assesses the donor site carefully to maximise results while avoiding over-harvesting, which can permanently thin the donor area.

Hair characteristics affecting hair transplant — NZ

Individual Hair Characteristics

Hair colour, texture, and curl pattern all affect the visual impact of each graft. Curly or coarse hair tends to provide better visual coverage per graft than fine or straight hair — meaning some patients can achieve their goals with fewer grafts. Matching donor hair characteristics to the recipient area is also important for natural-looking results.

Desired hairline outcome hair transplant NZ

Your Desired Outcome

Patients seeking a lowered hairline or dense frontal coverage require significantly more grafts than those targeting specific thinning zones. At your consultation, Bülent will discuss what is realistically achievable with your donor supply and help you understand the trade-offs between coverage area and density.

Age and hair loss progression — hair transplant NZ

Age

Age plays a significant role in candidacy. We typically recommend hair transplant procedures for men 28 years and older, to ensure that hair loss has stabilised. Performing a transplant while hair loss is still actively progressing can lead to uneven or unnatural results over time as surrounding natural hair continues to thin. Bülent will assess your progression pattern and advise honestly on timing.

Hair loss medication finasteride minoxidil NZ

Medication

The use of hair loss medication — such as finasteride or minoxidil — can influence both the decision to have a transplant and the number of grafts needed. Patients who are managing hair loss effectively with medication may delay or reduce the scale of a procedure. Others with limited response to medication may require more comprehensive surgical treatment.

Stages of hair loss

What Stage Is My Hair Loss At?

The Norwood scale is the standard system for classifying male pattern baldness, ranging from Stage I (minimal loss) to Stage VII (extensive balding). It's a useful guide for estimating how many grafts you may need.

Norwood scale stages of male pattern baldness — hair transplant guide NZ

The number of grafts required varies significantly at each stage. Earlier stages typically need fewer grafts, while advanced stages may need considerably more. Some individuals with very advanced hair loss may not be suitable candidates — if the donor supply is insufficient to achieve adequate coverage, a transplant may not produce the natural-looking result you're hoping for. Bülent will assess your stage and give you an honest view of what is achievable.

Norwood Stage Description Typical Graft Range Estimated Cost (NZD)
Stage I–IIMinimal recession — early hairline changes1,000–1,500 grafts$14,000–$21,000
Stage IIINoticeable recession at temples1,500–2,000 grafts$21,000–$28,000
Stage IVSignificant frontal loss, some crown thinning2,000–2,500 grafts$28,000–$35,000
Stage VLarge area of loss, bridge between zones thinning2,500–3,500 grafts$35,000–$49,000
Stage VI–VIIExtensive balding across scalp3,500–4,000+ grafts$49,000–$56,000+

These are indicative ranges only. Your exact graft count is confirmed at consultation. All pricing at $14 per graft, minimum 1,000 grafts.

How pricing works

Understanding Grafts vs Individual Hairs

Our pricing is based on the number of grafts — not individual hairs. Here's why that matters.

A hair graft is a small piece of tissue containing one or more hair follicles. Each graft can contain between 1 and 6 hairs, depending on your individual hair growth pattern. This number varies from person to person and can only be determined once the graft is removed and examined.

Because the exact number of hairs per graft cannot be predicted beforehand, providing a cost estimate based on individual hair count isn't feasible or accurate. Pricing based on grafts is the standard used by hair transplant surgeons worldwide — it's the clearest and most honest way to quote.

⚠️ Important patient safety information

The Risks of Going Overseas for a Hair Transplant

Turkey and India are the most popular overseas destinations for hair transplants — and there are genuinely excellent clinics in both countries. But there is also a serious and well-documented problem that every patient considering overseas treatment should understand before they book.

⚠️ The ISHRS "Fight the FIGHT" Campaign

The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) — the world's leading professional body for hair restoration — launched a major public awareness campaign called "Fight the FIGHT" (Fight the Fraudulent, Illicit & Global Hair Transplants) specifically to warn patients about what is happening in many overseas hair transplant clinics.

According to ISHRS, in an alarming number of overseas clinics — particularly in Turkey and other popular medical tourism destinations — patients are having their procedures performed not by doctors, but by unlicensed technicians with no medical training or surgical qualifications.

  • The doctor you consulted online shows you to a room — then never appears again. The entire procedure is performed by technicians hired by the day.
  • Some clinics use general anaesthetic — putting you to sleep — specifically so you cannot see who is performing your surgery. Under local anaesthetic, as used at Yaprak Hair Clinic, you are awake throughout and aware of who is treating you.
  • Patients are sometimes told they are receiving 4,000–6,000 grafts when in reality only half that number is transplanted.
  • Clinics may run multiple patients simultaneously, with technicians moving between procedure rooms.
  • Results of illegal procedures include permanent visible scarring, depleted donor areas, unnatural hairlines, infection, poor growth, and necrosis (tissue death).
  • Once you are home in New Zealand, there is no practical recourse against an overseas clinic if something goes wrong.

"The demand is so high, reports are that taxi cab drivers and Syrian refugees do the surgery in some overseas countries. Patients are the ones that suffer when they realise too late who did the surgery." — Dr Ricardo Mejia, Chair, ISHRS Committee on Issues Pertaining to the Unlicensed Practice of Medicine
