The number of grafts required is directly influenced by how much hair you have already lost. The larger the area that needs coverage, the more grafts are needed. During your consultation, Bülent assesses the size of the recipient area, the density of your existing hair, and your goals — all of which determine your graft count.
Donor Site Availability
Your donor hair — the follicles taken from the back and sides of your scalp — is a finite resource. The density and quality of this area directly limits how many grafts can be safely harvested. Bülent assesses the donor site carefully to maximise results while avoiding over-harvesting, which can permanently thin the donor area.
Individual Hair Characteristics
Hair colour, texture, and curl pattern all affect the visual impact of each graft. Curly or coarse hair tends to provide better visual coverage per graft than fine or straight hair — meaning some patients can achieve their goals with fewer grafts. Matching donor hair characteristics to the recipient area is also important for natural-looking results.

Age
Age plays a significant role in candidacy. We typically recommend hair transplant procedures for men 28 years and older, to ensure that hair loss has stabilised. Performing a transplant while hair loss is still actively progressing can lead to uneven or unnatural results over time as surrounding natural hair continues to thin. Bülent will assess your progression pattern and advise honestly on timing.
Medication
The use of hair loss medication — such as finasteride or minoxidil — can influence both the decision to have a transplant and the number of grafts needed. Patients who are managing hair loss effectively with medication may delay or reduce the scale of a procedure. Others with limited response to medication may require more comprehensive surgical treatment.
What Stage Is My Hair Loss At?
The Norwood scale is the standard system for classifying male pattern baldness, ranging from Stage I (minimal loss) to Stage VII (extensive balding). It's a useful guide for estimating how many grafts you may need.
The number of grafts required varies significantly at each stage. Earlier stages typically need fewer grafts, while advanced stages may need considerably more. Some individuals with very advanced hair loss may not be suitable candidates — if the donor supply is insufficient to achieve adequate coverage, a transplant may not produce the natural-looking result you're hoping for. Bülent will assess your stage and give you an honest view of what is achievable.

A hair graft is a small piece of tissue containing one or more hair follicles. Each graft can contain between 1 and 6 hairs, depending on your individual hair growth pattern. This number varies from person to person and can only be determined once the graft is removed and examined.
Because the exact number of hairs per graft cannot be predicted beforehand, providing a cost estimate based on individual hair count isn't feasible or accurate. Pricing based on grafts is the standard used by hair transplant surgeons worldwide — it's the clearest and most honest way to quote.
